Love Island

Despite the great weather we are experiencing (let’s hope it doesn’t go away the moment the kids get out of school!) everyone seems to be stuck to his or her television. If you’ve been hiding under a rock, you may ask why? Well if it’s not the World Cup, its Love Island.

In the office, we have some friendly competition going on to predict the World Cup scores in the hope of winning a day off work. Strangely this year’s uptake has been higher than usual. However, at BA we also love an island- kitchen islands to be specific. And we know you do too.

The central island unit is increasingly becoming a fundamental feature of kitchen design; by providing solutions for more counter space to aiding additional seating and storage. The kitchen island has so much to deliver when designing your kitchen. Crucially they are not suited only to the larger, open-plan kitchens. With the correct design choices, an island in a small space can help to form a boundary between the area where you cook your meal and where you dine and relax.

To help you love your kitchen island, check out BA’s top choices for design inspiration.

Store more than plates and cutlery

Your island can be so much more than acting as the storage space for the ‘good’ plates you only use at Christmas. If you are always reaching for that stack of cookbooks when looking for new recipe ideas why not add them to your kitchen island? While also being a brilliant way to display your collection, integrated bookshelves also mean they will always be close at hand when you need them most.

Also, if you are still struggling to find the right place for your pet’s food bowls then we have an idea. You guessed it- an integrated space set into your kitchen island. This solution means everyone can stop complaining about tripping over them as they come in the back door. Mess averted.

Make the most out of a small space

If you think your kitchen is too small for an island, we can tell you (politely) that you are wrong. You just need to be a little creative. Repurposing a console table or upcycling a vintage one means you can quickly, easily and affordably create something practical for that extra bit of counter space.

Transform your table with a coat of paint to create a centrepiece that completes the look of your kitchen. Adding wheels means you can reclaim the space in your kitchen when needed. Just temporarily move the island to somewhere more suitable.

If upcycling isn’t your style, then a skinny design provides the benefits of an island while giving you the space to move around your kitchen. Add an overhang so that it can double as a breakfast bar too.

Add crucial power points

In today’s modern home you can never have too many electrical plug sockets. During meal preparation, extra sockets can make life so much easier for powering food processors, stand mixers and other small appliances. When enjoying a coffee during some downtime, they can be a handy lifeline for powering your tablet or giving your phone a quick charge before heading out the door.

Additionally, integrating a microwave or wine cooler into your kitchen island can be a vital space saver.
