Kitchen Design Tips For Beginners

Just bought your first home? Read our kitchen design tips for beginners.

When it comes to designing a new kitchen there is so much choice and advice out there that it can be quite overwhelming for someone who is new to it all. That’s why we have put together this guide to show you what you need in order to make your dream kitchen a reality.

Visualise Your Design

You need to envisage your kitchen at its final stage, its size, what appliances it’s going to have, the colours you want to feature in it etc. You also need to consider if it’s just going to be used for cooking or is it going to have an eating area too.

You also need to think about the different types of kitchen designs available and decide which one would best your home and what you want it to achieve. Having a clear idea of what you want your kitchen to be will ensure that you are left with a pleasing end result and not a mismatch of ideas that doesn’t really work.

Should You Design Yourself Or Ask A Professional?

If you have no clue about how to project your kitchen ideas from your head onto a canvas and finally into the kitchen itself then get a designer. If you want the best results then you will need an expert eye and hand at work. However if you happen to be a wizard with design, styles and colours then by all means have a go at it yourself.

Whether you hire a designer or you’re designing it yourself, only try something complicated with your kitchen if you have the money. If you’re on a budget it means you don’t have the money to redo all the mistakes. Keep it Simple, symmetrical, sleek and remember to keep it cheap!

Rustic vs. Modern Style

Rustic

For a rustic feel to your kitchen you will need wooden:

  • Corner Tops
  • Table Tops
  • Various stained wood cabinets
  • Some stone work maybe surrounding the oven/cooker

For the colours:

Keep colours the same but in different shades. Or go for opposing colours i.e. vanilla and sandalwood brown.

Modern

To achieve that modern look:

  • Granite/marble/solid colour plastic table tops
  • Granite/marble/solid colour plastic corner tops
  • Matt finish paint on walls

Tiles, Cabinets & Corner Tops

Or as I like to refer to them as “The Costly Components” because if you mess the style up, replacing all these is going to cost you a lot. These are the core of any jaw dropping kitchen, once happy with your tiles, cabinets and corner tops you can rest assured you are on your way to a your dream kitchen. Take some time to browse through furniture shops to find the most suitable additions to your kitchen. Many people leave this so that it becomes an afterthought which is often apparent in the finished article.

The Build

As we discussed earlier if you are not a good handyman call in the Pros. Nothing can destroy a perfectly good kitchen plan more than being eager to say you did it yourself when you have absolutely no experience. Don’t be afraid to call in different specialist for different areas, for example kitchen doors often get overlooked but they can play a huge part in the final aesthetic of the room, especially when they are glass so calling in door refurbishing or glazing specialists may be a good idea, budget allowing.

Call family friends even some local business you know who had good work done for them and ask who did their work.
