So another year has passed and as we wave goodbye to 2014 and say Hi to 2015 it’s all about what’s hot and what’s not. It’s heating up in the kitchen stakes, with the pantone colour for 2015 just announced as Marsala but will this be introduced into the kitchen?
BA Components Head of Product Development Kieran McCracken gives us his views on upcoming trends.
The colour-mixing trend has taken off massively in 2014 and, we have seen this trend pop up all over the Internet. People are no longer opting for the ‘safe’ option when it comes to the kitchen, but daring to be different.
Kieran, how can we follow the trend of this pantone colour?
“As the Marsala colour is a red tone, opting for two colours in the kitchen would allow you to introduce the Marsala colour without total commitment.”
Presenting two colours to the kitchen introduces the fun factor and allows you to have your base cabinets a different colour to the wall cabinets or you could opt for a different coloured kitchen island.
We are seeing Matt kitchens pop up a lot. Can you tell us more about this trend?
“It has been all about the gloss for the past few years but we are seeing an increase in the demand for a matt finish.”
We asked Kieran about noticing the even more popular; textured matt finishes. “Yes, not only do they look great but these finishes are ideal in a family home because you won’t see the finger marks as much as you would on a gloss door.”
We won’t be seeing the death of the gloss door according to Kieran, In fact, with the soft colours, gloss is still very popular and seen as a modern option when you team this look with handle-less doors.
Having visited several countries in 2014, Kieran tells us how wood grains are coming back into fashion. “In mainland Europe there has been a surge in demand for wood grain finishes. So rest assured this trend will sweep this direction very soon.”
If you have limited space and a small kitchen then the trend of mixing finishes would work well. This look is gaining momentum as “people are mixing a light unicolour matt wall doors with contrasting base doors in gloss to reflect the light.”
“This can also been seen with the mixing of strong wood grains used in base units or islands and matt or gloss light unicolour used on wall units, this is to reflect the light and works especially well when you have a north facing kitchen with little direct sunlight, or a kitchen with small windows.”
