Design Ideas For Small(er) Kitchens

Bella High Gloss White Lincoln Kitchen

They say that “kitchens and bathrooms sell houses”, but sometimes you just have to live with the fact that your kitchen is, well, on the petite side. Don’t worry though – it doesn’t mean that you’re doomed to having a gloomy kitchen that you can’t enjoy. It just means that you need to think outside the box a little to transform your small kitchen into a fully utilised space that is practical and looks good.

Wrap Around Shelving

When space is an issue you need to get creative. This is when wrap around shelving can be the perfect solution. Not only does it look great, but this form of shelving really creates space – you can fit more into the same area by including shelving in the corners of the room as well. You can even have a few layers of wrap around shelving so although you may not have much ground room you can still store upwards.

Make The Most Of Your Island

If an island is taking up your kitchen space then you can use it to your advantage by turning it into a storage area as well as a dining table. Try adding cabinets to the island, which you can store your cups, plates, cookware and cutlery in. This will free up lots of space in your other kitchen cupboards.

Paint Your Cabinets In The Same Colour As The Walls

This is a great tip for creating the illusion of extra space in a small kitchen. Painting your cabinets and shelves in the same colour as the surrounding walls creates a sense of the walls being further away than they actually are. This will work particularly well for white or light coloured kitchens.

Use Great Materials

The advantage of having a small kitchen is that you have less area to decorate, which means that you can afford to go the extra mile when it comes to materials. How about a marble backsplash area or crystal cabinet knobs to make your kitchen small but elegant? It’s amazing how much of a difference it can make if you make what’s there look stunning – people will focus less on the size and more on the aesthetic of the room.

Narrow Your Furniture

This is a useful method of creating more space in your kitchen, and any room for that matter. It may be the case that your clunky kitchen furniture is making your kitchen smaller that it has to be. Instead go for narrow tables, smaller chairs and slimmer islands, or if you have wooden kitchen furniture try sending it to a specialist who can alter it for you.

Try A Retractable Table

This is an ingenious space saver. You can design your island to allow it to store a retractable table that can be pulled out when you want to use it and hidden away when you don’t. This allows the kitchen to be both practical and spacious depending on what you are doing. This online tool lets you compare thousands of products to find the perfect one to suit your décor and measurements.

Use Backsplash Mirrors

We all know that mirrors are great for creating the illusion of extra space and they can be used in your kitchen too. Add a mirror to your backsplash area to reflect the rest of the room and give it a larger feel.

Just because you may have limited kitchen space, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the most out of it. Try applying these tips to your kitchen and you’ll be surprised at the difference it can make.
